Peru’s president Boluarte impeached

Lawmakers in Peru have removed President Dina Boluarte from office over alleged corruption, marking another dramatic twist in the nation’s turbulent political history.

Following the impeachment vote on Friday, October 10, 2025, Congress leader Jose Jeri, 38, was sworn in as Peru’s new president.

Jeri pledged to head a transitional government until elections in April 2026, vowing to focus on curbing rising insecurity.

“The main enemy is outside, in the streets — the criminal gangs, the crime groups. We must declare war on them,” Jeri said.

Boluarte’s removal adds to a decade-long pattern of instability in Peru, which has now seen seven presidents in nine years.

Congress cited her “permanent moral incapacity” as the basis for impeachment, a motion that gained rare bipartisan backing, including from former allies.

Boluarte was summoned to defend herself before lawmakers late Thursday but failed to appear. The session concluded with 118 votes in favor of her dismissal.

Her attorney, Juan Carlos Portugal, condemned the process as rushed and unfair, saying she was denied sufficient time to prepare a defense.

Outside the Congress building in Lima, dozens of demonstrators celebrated the outcome, waving placards reading “Down with Dina!”

Right-wing congresswoman Norma Yarrow of the Popular Renewal party said Boluarte’s government had “mistreated the country,” adding that “extortion and crime have increased — she deserves punishment.”

In a video message released after the vote, Boluarte, 63, rejected the corruption accusations and defended her record, insisting she had fought hard against crime and upheld democratic principles.

Boluarte took office in December 2022 after the impeachment of Pedro Castillo, who was removed following deadly protests that left more than 50 people dead.

Her presidency, however, was marked by persistent unrest, multiple corruption probes, and widespread public discontent.
