Petrol truck crushes six to death in Ibadan

A tragic accident on Tuesday claimed the lives of at least six people after a petroleum truck lost control along the Beere–Agodi Road in Ibadan.

The incident also destroyed no fewer than six tricycles, popularly known as keke, as the truck veered through the busy corridor.

An eyewitness said the truck driver lost control at the Beere end of the road, ramming into two tricycles and killing two passengers instantly before speeding toward Oje Market Road, where four more people were crushed.

Another eyewitness, a motorcyclist, suggested the death toll could be higher, alleging that some bodies had already been removed in body bags before emergency responders arrived.

Several injured victims were rushed to different hospitals across Ibadan for treatment.

One survivor, Kamoru, who had just picked up his repaired tricycle from the mechanic village, recounted how the truck slammed into his vehicle but he narrowly survived.

At the Mapo Divisional Police Station, a grieving relative of one of the deceased said he lost his brother, who had named his newborn daughter only three days earlier.

“I thought he would survive because at first he only lost his two legs, but he later died at the hospital,” he said, adding that the late father leaves behind a 10-day-old baby.

A senior police officer confirmed that two corpses and several damaged tricycles were moved to the Mapo Police Station.

Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, also confirmed the accident, saying the exact number of casualties was yet to be determined.
