Police arrest fake JAMB coordinator in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Eric Nwombu, for allegedly posing as a JAMB coordinator and unlawfully possessing examination materials.

In a statement on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect was apprehended by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police’s Safe School Initiative.

According to the police, items recovered from Nwombu include eight JAMB examination slips and a notebook containing names and examination numbers of students, which he reportedly could not explain.

The arrest followed a tip-off that the suspect had been collecting 2026 examination slips from candidates who visited a cyber café in Atani to check their exam centres. When questioned, he allegedly claimed to be a JAMB coordinator in the area, raising suspicion among staff of the facility, who alerted security operatives.

Ikenga said the suspect attempted to escape upon noticing the approaching officers but was quickly apprehended.

He added that preliminary investigations are ongoing, while the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for further inquiry.

The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting the integrity of public examinations and urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.
