The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Ididiong James, for allegedly assaulting his mother and unlawfully possessing a firearm in Panshekara Quarters, Kano metropolis.
Police also recovered an English Beretta pistol loaded with eight rounds of ammunition from the suspect.
According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on January 25, 2026, after officers from the Panshekara Division responded to a distress call.
On arrival, the officers reportedly found that James had assaulted his mother at their residence before fleeing the scene.
The woman later handed over the pistol and ammunition to the police, explaining that she had discovered the weapon in her son’s bag and refused to return it to him, which allegedly triggered the attack.
She also raised concerns about her son’s change in behaviour after a New Year celebration.
James was subsequently arrested and is currently in police custody, while investigations continue.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commended the woman for her courage, urging parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s activities and promptly report suspicious behaviour.
The police command also called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines.
