Police warn residents against picking airstrike debris

Police authorities in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State have urged residents to stay away from debris left behind after recent U.S. airstrikes, warning that some items could still be dangerous.

Area Commander Muhammed Augie issued the caution after people were seen gathering scrap metals, wires, batteries, and other materials from the affected site to sell.

He asked the District Head of Jabo, Alhaji Abubakar Jabo, to advise residents not to visit the area or handle any fragments.

The Commandant of Base 15 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, Hassan Jatau, explained that the area has been sealed off to prevent injuries, stressing that unexploded devices may still be present and pose serious risks.

He called for more public awareness on the dangers of explosive remnants.

The U.S. strikes, which targeted ISIS militants, have raised fear and uncertainty among locals, with many questioning public safety measures.

Despite warnings, some residents reportedly took metallic pieces home in hopes of selling them to scrap buyers.

District Head Jabo expressed concern, noting that many young people searched through the rubble without protection and were unaware of the possible hazards.

He said the situation highlights poverty, poor awareness, and limited government response after the incident.
