Praying man drowns at Lagos beach

A 30-year-old man, identified simply as Samuel, has drowned at Elegushi Beach in the Lekki area of Lagos State where he had gone for prayers.

Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer SP Benjamin Hundeyin, on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, said a report to the police indicated that the man had gone to pray at the beach with his friends.

Hundeyin disclosed that the case was reported to the Ilasan Police Division at about 7:20 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21, by a man whose name was not mentioned.

Hundeyin said the report revealed that on Tuesday, at midnight, Samuel and three of his friends left Igbesan in Ogun State to Elegushi Beach in Lekki for prayers.

The police spokesman said the report stated that Samuel drowned during the prayer session at about 4 a.m.

Hundeyin added: “The scene was promptly visited by detectives of the division and effort is in progress by divers to recover the corpse.

“The family members of the deceased have been contacted and the investigation is ongoing.”
