RCCG: Adeboye didn’t protest against Jonathan’s govt over insecurity

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has refuted viral claims that its General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, participated in a protest against the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity in Nigeria.

The RCCG explained that the photograph being circulated on social media was taken during a nationwide peace walk organised by churches across the country at the instance of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2020.

The church’s clarification via a statement issued on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, followed allegations that Adeboye publicly condemned Jonathan’s tenure but has remained silent on the economic hardship and insecurity experienced under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

The church, however, said the peace walk was organised to draw national attention to the killing of Christians and other Nigerians, while urging the government to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and property.

“The walk in Ebute Metta, where Pastor Adeboye participated, was part of that nationwide exercise. It was neither organised against President Goodluck Jonathan nor connected in any way to his administration,” the RCCG stated.

It noted that pictures from the event have repeatedly resurfaced online and have been wrongly portrayed as evidence of a protest directed at Jonathan’s administration.

The church further stated that Adeboye’s message during the peace walk centred on the value and sanctity of human life, stressing that the inscription on his placard highlighted the worth of every Nigerian irrespective of religion or background.

Addressing claims that the cleric has remained silent on national issues, the RCCG pointed to remarks he made during the November 2025 Holy Ghost Service, where he called on the federal government to take decisive action against insecurity and terrorism.

The RCCG said Adeboye urged the government to pursue not only terrorists but also those financing and supporting their activities, while demanding greater accountability from security agencies.

The church also emphasised that Adeboye is a spiritual leader and not a political office holder, adding that Jonathan visited the Redemption City on several occasions during his tenure and received public prayers from the cleric each time.

“President Jonathan visited the Redemption City multiple times during his tenure and each time he visited, Pastor Adeboye prayed for him openly,” it stated.

The church maintained that neither Adeboye nor RCCG should be blamed for the country’s governance challenges, insisting that the viral narrative misrepresents the circumstances surrounding the peace walk.
