Rivers PDP defends Wike, slams Umar Sani’s criticism as “politically simplistic”

The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has come out strongly in defense of former Governor Nyesom Wike, dismissing recent comments by Umar Sani, former spokesperson for the PDP’s 2019 Presidential Campaign, as misleading and divisive.

In a press release signed by Kingsley Chuku, SAN, the State Legal Adviser of the Rivers PDP, the party rebuked Sani’s article titled “Wike Must Be Told That PDP Does Not Belong To Him”, calling it a “misguided assertion” that misrepresents the facts and underestimates Wike’s contributions to the party’s survival and relevance.

Chuku emphasized that while the PDP remains a national political institution built on democratic values and collective ownership, dismissing the influential role of Chief (Barr.) Nyesom Wike, CON, is both “mischievous and politically simplistic.”

“Chief Wike’s contributions are neither speculative nor marginal—they are recorded, verifiable, and indelible,” the statement read.

“At a time when many, including Mr. Umar Sani, stood silent or disengaged, Wike invested political capital, personal resources, and unwavering leadership to keep the PDP together.”

The Rivers PDP further accused Sani of promoting rhetoric that could deepen internal divisions within the party, warning that leadership in the PDP is not attained through “tabloid headlines or social media broadsides” but through consistent loyalty, grassroots mobilization, and tested commitment.

Contrary to Sani’s claims, the Rivers PDP insisted that Wike has never claimed ownership of the party, but instead embodies “the fighting spirit, resilience, and strategic depth” necessary for the PDP’s continuity.

“His influence is earned, not anointed, and is exercised within the bounds of the PDP’s constitution and democratic practices,” Chuku noted.

The statement also described Wike as a principled leader who values loyalty and integrity, adding that his commitment to political agreements has helped maintain internal discipline within the party.

Calling for unity and internal cohesion, Chuku urged party stakeholders to avoid divisive commentary and instead engage in constructive dialogue.

“True greatness in politics is not achieved by diminishing others but by joining hands with those who have preserved the democratic flame,” the release concluded.

Chief Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), remains one of the most influential figures in the PDP, especially in southern Nigeria.

His role in the party’s internal dynamics continues to spark debate ahead of future elections.
