Section of newly commissioned Osun flyover damaged after heavy rainfall

A section of the newly commissioned LAMECO flyover in Osogbo, Osun State, has been damaged less than a month after it was opened to traffic, raising concerns over the condition of the infrastructure.

The 672-metre flyover, commissioned by Governor Ademola Adeleke on July 1, developed a noticeable depression on Friday following nearly eight hours of heavy rainfall that lasted from Thursday into Friday.

The damaged section, located on one lane of the bridge, showed visible cracks and a sunken asphalt surface, forcing motorists to slow down while passing through the area. Many commuters also diverted to alternative routes over safety concerns.

When visited, security personnel from the Osun Amotekun Corps had cordoned off the affected section of the bridge to restrict vehicular and pedestrian access.

Residents and motorists called on the state government to immediately repair the damaged portion to prevent further deterioration and ensure the safety of road users.

Reacting to the development, the Osun State chapter of the Accord Party alleged that the damage was an act of sabotage by members of the opposition All Progressives Congress.

In a statement, the party claimed it had received credible reports suggesting that public infrastructure delivered by the Adeleke administration was being deliberately vandalised to undermine the government’s achievements ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

The party alleged that those behind the act were attempting to create the impression that the state government’s projects were substandard after failing to match its performance.

Accord condemned the alleged vandalism, stressing that public infrastructure belongs to the people of Osun State and should not be subjected to political rivalry.

There was no immediate response from the All Progressives Congress to the allegation at the time of filing this report.
