Shaibu flags off phase 2 of Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks, reaffirms ‘Soldier-First’ policy

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has launched the construction of Phase 2 of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks in Asokoro, Abuja, describing the project as a major step toward improving the welfare of Nigerian Army personnel.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, Shaibu said the initiative reflects the Army’s shift from short-term fixes to long-term solutions to its accommodation challenges.

He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continuous support in providing dignified housing for soldiers and officers.

He explained that Phase 2 is distinct from Phase 1, which was commissioned on January 23, 2025, and comes at a time when the Army is working to address housing shortages across the country.

Shaibu recalled promising during the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference that ongoing housing projects would be completed while new ones would be initiated.

As part of that effort, he has approved the construction of two 30-family blocks in each Army division, alongside renovation works.

However, he noted that renovations alone are insufficient, saying the new project offers a more sustainable solution.

According to him, the development aligns with his command philosophy to build a professional, adaptable and resilient Army capable of meeting its constitutional duties.

He added that the project is central to his “Soldier First” concept, which prioritizes troop welfare, stressing that operational success depends on how well personnel are supported.

Designed with future operational needs in mind, the barracks will provide secure and comfortable accommodation for troops and their families as deployments reduce.

Shaibu said it will also strengthen unit cohesion and enhance operational readiness.

He urged commanders to safeguard Army land and properties across the country to support future development.
