Six die as military vehicle, bus collide in Adamawa

Six people, including four members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and a soldier, were killed in a tragic road accident along the Girei–Song Highway in Adamawa State on Wednesday.

The crash occurred around 1:50 p.m. in the Narehi area of Girei Local Government Area and involved a military gun truck travelling from Gombi to Yola and a commercial Hummer bus heading from Yola to Mubi.

Witnesses said the collision caused the commercial bus to overturn before it burst into flames, leaving the occupants trapped inside.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Adamawa State Police Command, SP Suleiman Ngurore, said all five passengers aboard the Hummer bus died after the vehicle caught fire.

According to him, preliminary investigations showed that four of the victims were corps members serving in Adamawa State.

Ngurore identified two of the deceased as Suleiman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, both from Kaduna State, while efforts were ongoing to identify the remaining victims and notify their families.

He added that a soldier travelling in the military vehicle also lost his life in the crash.

The police spokesperson said officers and emergency responders were immediately deployed to the scene, while the bodies of the victims were evacuated to the Specialist Hospital, Yola.

He noted that investigations had commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident and assured that further information would be made available as the process continues.

The tragic incident has sparked grief among residents and members of the NYSC community in Adamawa, with many mourning the loss of the young corps members and other victims.
