‘Stay alert’: US warns citizens of terrorist threat in Nigeria

The United States government has warned American citizens of a possible “terrorist threat” against U.S. ‌facilities and affiliated schools in Nigeria.

The U.S. embassy in Nigeria made this known via a security alert issued on Monday night.

The embassy urged citizens to take additional precautions when travelling to the embassy in Abuja and the U.S. consulate in Lagos and U.S.-affiliated schools.

It stated: “The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens take additional precautions when traveling to the U.S. Embassy, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and U.S. affiliated schools, to include varying times and routes. Increasing awareness of your surroundings, avoiding predictable routines, and reviewing general security precautions with your family can help reduce your risk.

“Actions to Take: Be aware of your surroundings, keep a low profile, review your personal security plans, vary your regular routes, keep your cell phone charged in case of emergency, stay alert in public places, avoid crowds and demonstrations, familiarize yourself with emergency exits when entering buildings.

“For additional information about threats and risks to travelers in Nigeria, please visit the Nigeria Country Information page.

“The Consular Sections of Embassy Abuja and Consulate General Lagos remain open.

The embassy has been on heightened alert since the U.S. and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran.

The embassy did not give details on the security threat, but Nigerian authorities have in recent days stepped up security in Abuja following threats of pro-Iranian protests.

Some Shi’ite members recent took to the streets to march in support of Iran.
