Supreme Court fixes April 22 for PDP leadership crisis appeals

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has scheduled April 22 for the hearing of appeals arising from the deepening leadership crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party.

The appeals were filed by a PDP faction led by former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, challenging Court of Appeal judgments delivered on March 9.

A five-member panel headed by Justice Mohammed Garba fixed the date on Tuesday after granting an application for accelerated hearing.

The court also abridged filing timelines, directing respondents to file responses within five days and giving appellants two days for any reply.

The appeals stem from Court of Appeal decisions that upheld Federal High Court rulings restraining the PDP from holding its planned national convention pending compliance with the Electoral Act and party regulations.

Those rulings were delivered by Justices James Omotosho and Peter Lifu, following suits filed by aggrieved party members including former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido.

Several political heavyweights were present in court on Tuesday, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, alongside Turaki and other party figures.
