Temu assures data protection as NDPC probes platform

Temu has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting users’ personal information as Nigeria’s data protection regulator investigates the platform over alleged breaches of the country’s privacy laws.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) said it launched a probe into the fast-growing e-commerce platform to examine how it collects, processes, stores, and transfers Nigerians’ personal data under the Nigeria Data Protection Act.

Responding on Tuesday, Temu said safeguarding customer privacy and ensuring data security remain central to its operations, adding that it is committed to complying with all applicable regulations.

“At Temu, protecting user privacy and data security is a top priority. We are committed to complying with applicable laws and regulations in our data practices,” the company said, noting it would maintain open and constructive engagement with the regulator throughout the investigation.

The NDPC said the probe focuses on issues including data minimisation, duty of care, transparency requirements, and the cross-border transfer of personal information. It warned that organisations found violating the law could face enforcement actions and penalties.

Since entering the Nigeria market in late 2024, Temu has quickly expanded its user base, driven by low prices, aggressive promotions, and a mobile-first shopping model. The platform’s rapid growth and the large volume of consumer data it handles have drawn increased regulatory scrutiny.

The commission said it will continue monitoring compliance as part of its mandate to protect Nigerians’ data rights and enforce accountability among digital platforms.
