Tinubu approves N2bn relief, backs ex-governors’ peace panel for Plateau

President Bola Tinubu has approved N2 billion in relief for victims of the March 29 attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North, and endorsed the formation of a peace committee of former Plateau governors, following a high-level meeting with state stakeholders at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The meeting produced what Governor Caleb Mutfwang described as an unprecedented development — the first-ever convergence of all living former governors of Plateau State under one roof.

The delegation included ex-governors Simon Lalong, Jonah Jang, Joshua Dariye, and Fidelis Tapgun, as well as traditional rulers and key political figures.

Tinubu directed the newly endorsed committee to review past peace reports, harmonise recommendations, and drive the implementation of long-term reconciliation strategies.

He also renewed his push for the establishment of state police, describing it as essential to addressing Plateau’s security challenges.

The President took a hard line on violence, warning that sponsors and instigators of attacks in the state would face the full weight of federal authority.

“If you identify and you know the name of troublemakers… we will use the instrument of office to deal with them,” he said.

Tinubu also directed that non-indigenes be more fully integrated into the state’s political and administrative structures as part of broader confidence-building measures.

Traditional rulers at the meeting, including Gbong Gwom Jos Da Jacob Gyang Buba, called for enhanced security deployment, technological surveillance, and the resettlement of displaced persons — areas the Federal Government indicated readiness to support.

Governor Mutfwang said the Abuja engagement had helped depoliticise key issues and foster unity among Plateau’s leadership. “The coming together of the former governors has never happened before.

“This is the first time it is happening, and I believe that is a step we can build upon,” he said.
