Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has commended President Bola Tinubu for the exceptional honour he accorded the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, noting that even Buhari never extended such recognition to others while alive.
Following Buhari’s recent passing, Tinubu declared a public holiday, personally attended his burial, visited the family, held a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in his honour, and renamed a federal institution after him.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sani said: “The President physically attended the burial of Buhari, met with his family, declared a public holiday, held a FEC meeting in his honour, and renamed a university to immortalise him.
Something even the late President never did for others. And yet, they say he is ‘exploiting the death of Buhari’. What would they have said if he had done none of the above? Politics is something else.”
Sani’s remarks come amid criticism from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which accused Tinubu of using Buhari’s death for political mileage.
The opposition party labelled the president’s gestures as a calculated public relations move.
In response, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Mr. Sunday Dare, dismissed the accusations as “opportunistic and dishonest,” accusing the ADC of exploiting the situation for political attention.
“It’s ironic that those accusing the President of politicising Buhari’s death are the ones dancing on his grave for clout,” Dare said.
“The burial was carried out with dignity, and Nigerians across the globe witnessed a solemn farewell for a former leader.”
Dare emphasized that Tinubu was not seeking popularity through the funeral rites but was focused on governance, letting his record of achievements speak for him.
