Security operatives in Zamfara State have arrested a 25-year-old man, Mannir Adam, for allegedly transporting 800 rounds of AK-47 ammunition concealed inside the fuel tank of a motorcycle.
According to security sources, the suspect, a resident of Yankuzo village in Tsafe Local Government Area, was apprehended at about 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday along the Gusau–Funtua highway.
He was intercepted at a security checkpoint in Yankara while riding a red Boxer motorcycle.
During a search of the motorcycle, operatives reportedly discovered 800 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition carefully hidden inside the bike’s fuel tank.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly collected the ammunition from the Bawa area in Saminaka, located in Kaduna State, and was transporting it to Kucheri village in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Security sources said the ammunition was suspected to be intended for armed bandits operating in the area.
The arrest, according to the sources, represents a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to disrupt the supply of weapons and ammunition to criminal groups terrorising communities across Zamfara and neighbouring states.
The suspect is currently in custody while further investigations continue to track down other members of the suspected arms-supply network.
