Truck kills pedestrian attempting to cross Lagos expressway

A truck has crushed a pedestrian to death along the Ojota expressway in Lagos State.

The pedestrian was crushed to death while attempting to cross the Ojota expressway, bypassing the designated pedestrian bridge over the weekend.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident via a statement issued by its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

Taofiq said preliminary investigations revealed that the truck driver, in an attempt to flee the scene after the fatal collision, lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a Toyota Corolla.

He stated that LASTMA officers apprehended the fleeing driver and secured the vehicle, noting that both the suspect and vehicle were handed over to the operatives of the Ogudu Police Division for further investigation and appropriate legal action.

The LASTMA spokesman added that the remains of the deceased were also handed to the officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU).

Taofiq warned against unlawful crossing of highways in Lagos, saying: “It is both reckless and unlawful to ignore the infrastructural provisions made for pedestrian safety.

“The Lagos State Government has invested significantly in pedestrian bridges, and it is incumbent upon all road users to utilise them conscientiously.”
