The United Bank for Africa has raised concerns over what it described as a false and malicious publication circulating on social media, alleging that its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, has divorced his wife.
In a formal notice issued by the bank’s Group Head of Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communication, Alero Ladipo, the institution dismissed the claim as entirely fabricated, reckless, and intended to mislead the public while damaging the reputation of its chairman.
UBA stated that the matter has been reported to law enforcement authorities, who have already commenced investigations. The bank confirmed that three individuals allegedly linked to the creation and spread of the false information have been arrested.
Those named include Kingsley Akunemeihe, also known as @Directorkem, Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue, identified as @problemchimky.
According to the statement, investigations are ongoing and may lead to further arrests and prosecutions of others involved in originating or amplifying the claims.
The bank issued a cease-and-desist directive to individuals and platforms involved in disseminating the content, urging them to immediately remove the publication, refrain from further sharing, and preserve all relevant records, including digital communications and metadata, for potential legal action.
UBA warned that failure to comply would result in legal proceedings, including claims for defamation, damages, and other remedies under applicable laws.
The financial institution reiterated its commitment to protecting the reputation and privacy of its brand and its chairman, stating that it would pursue both civil and criminal actions against those found responsible.
