UNILORIN student commits suicide over hardship

A 200-level student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) in Kwara State has committed suicide over economic hardship in the country.

The male student, whose identity was yet to be confirmed, was from the Department of Mass Communication in the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS).

It was gathered that the student committed suicide at his private residence located at Oke-Odo axis of Tanke in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

Sources in the university community disclosed that the deceased committed suicide due to financial challenges.

It was also learnt that the deceased lost his father a few years ago, while his mother, a retired school teacher, had since taken over financial responsibility for his academics.

The deceased’s financial crisis reportedly started when he resumed school last year.

The development was said to have made his colleagues to raise some funds to pay his tuition fees and buy food items for him.

However, it was gathered that the deceased decided to take a poisonous substance last weekend, just after his roommate had left for lectures, leaving a note for his roommate which stated his inability to cope with his financial situation as a reason for committing suicide.

It was further gathered that his roommate raised the alarm on the incident when he returned from lectures.

A senior administrative officer in UNILORIN, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident to journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

The UNILORIN official described the incident as shocking, saying the development had thrown the university and students into a mourning mood.
