UNN debunks terrorist attack, bans motorcycles on campus

The management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Enugu State, has dismissed reports circulating on social media about an alleged terrorist attack and planned mass abduction on campus.

The UNN management assured students, staff, and visitors that there is no verified security threat to the institution.

The institution made this known via a statement issued by its Acting Public Relations Officer, Inya Agha Egwu, on Sunday, June 7, 2026.

Egwu noted that investigations revealed no credible intelligence to support the claims contained in the online post.

Egwu, however, announced additional security measures aimed at strengthening safety on campus. These include the deployment of personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army to strategic entry points, working alongside the university’s security unit.

The UNN spokesman also disclosed that some access gates would be temporarily shut to improve the monitoring and regulation of movement into and out of the campus.

He added: “Consequently, no motorcycle will be permitted beyond the University gates except those belonging to authorised security personnel.

“Staff who commute to work on motorcycles are advised to park them at designated locations outside the campus perimeter before proceeding to their offices.”

Egwu urged students and staff to remain calm and continue their academic and administrative activities without fear, stressing that there is no known threat to the university community.

Egwu also cautioned against the spread of unverified information capable of causing panic and unnecessary anxiety, while encouraging vigilance and the prompt reporting of suspicious activities to security authorities.

The UNN spokesperson reiterated that security is a collective responsibility and called on all stakeholders to cooperate in maintaining a safe and peaceful learning environment.
