Urban renewal: Govt impounds goats for damaging newly planted trees

In a surprising move, the Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has begun seizing goats that have been destroying newly planted trees under its Urban Renewal Project.

The Commissioner, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, confirmed the development in a statement on Friday, revealing that several goats were already in custody at Zone I of the Nigeria Police Command for feeding on tree seedlings planted along major roads such as Lodge Road and Race Course.

“These trees are part of our broader effort to reduce heat, combat air pollution, and beautify Kano,” Dr. Hashim said. “Unfortunately, stray goats have become a serious threat to this project.”

He noted that complaints from residents about free-roaming goats prompted the ministry’s action, warning that the government would not tolerate the destruction of public property.

“We’ve taken steps to impound any goat found destroying these plants,” he emphasized.

The ministry urged the public to support the greening initiative by keeping their animals secured and protecting the newly planted trees.

“Our goal is a cleaner, greener Kano—and we need everyone’s cooperation to achieve that,” Dr. Hashim added.
