US hails Nigeria over conviction of 386 militants

The United States has praised Nigeria for convicting 386 militants, describing the development as a significant step toward accountability in the country’s long-running fight against terrorism.

Massad Boulus, Senior Advisor to President Donald Trump for Arab and African Affairs, said the convictions — secured after years of court delays — demonstrated Nigeria’s determination to confront extremism through its legal system.

“The United States commends the Nigerian government for its strong commitment to expediting the trials,” Boulus said, adding that timely and transparent legal processes are critical to confronting extremism and reinforcing public trust in judicial institutions.

He stressed that upholding the rule of law is essential for Nigeria’s safety, stability, and long-term security, and reaffirmed Washington’s support for continued efforts to strengthen judicial efficiency and fairness across the country.

The convictions mark a major milestone in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts, particularly in the North-East, where Islamist insurgencies have posed a persistent threat to lives and stability.
