Uzo Njoku to host first African exhibition in Lagos

Nigerian-American visual artist and designer, Uzo Njoku, is set to debut her much-anticipated homecoming exhibition in Lagos titled ‘An Owambe Exhibition by Uzo Njoku’.

Njoku, in a statement made available to The Star on Thursday, August 21, disclosed that the event would be held between November 27, 2025, and January 22, 2026, at 67C Kofo Abayomi, Victoria Island, Lagos State.

Njoku stated that the exhibition will introduce nine new paintings that explore themes such as intergenerational conflict, female beauty standards, queer identity, spiritual resilience, and childhood ambiguity.

She said: “This exhibition is not just about showing paintings.

“It’s about creating a space for Lagosians to celebrate, question, and reimagine our culture together.”

The exhibition will commence on November 27 with “Print, Dye, Repeat: A hands-on textile workshop celebrating Nigeria’s dyeing and printing traditions.

“December 4 – Moonlight Storytime: An intimate activation including folklore and colouring sheets for children aged 18 months – 6 years.

“December 11 – Highlife Reimagined: An intimate live jazz session.

“December 16 – Narrating Lagos: Writers and performers present works inspired by Uzo Njoku’s paintings.

“December 27 – Inspired by Uzo: Student Studio: A guided workshop for secondary and university students.

“January 3 – Inspired by Uzo: Adult Studio: A creative session for adult painters in the beginning stages and industry professionals.

January 8 – Artist Talk with Uzo: A moderated Q&A with Uzo Njoku.

“January 15 – From Studio to Runway: Fashion presentation of Njoku’s fabric collaboration with a Lagos-based designer.

“January 22 – Art Book Launch: The release of Uzo Njoku’s exclusive art book for An Owambe Exhibition.”

Njoku is a visual artist, designer, and entrepreneur whose work merges African textile traditions, bold portraiture, and contemporary storytelling.

A graduate of the University of Virginia and founder of UzoArt Inc., she has collaborated with global brands such as Apple Music, Tommy Hilfiger, Walmart, and YSL Beauty.

Her work has been exhibited in Lagos, New York, and Washington DC.
