Wanted bandit kingpin nabbed while attempting to flee Nigeria

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Intelligence Department Special Tactical Squad (FID–STS) have arrested a wanted bandit leader, Mohammed Usman, popularly known as “Yellow Lawani,” while he was allegedly attempting to flee Nigeria from Kogi State.

According to a video report by Arise TV on Monday, June 22, 2026, the suspect was intercepted alongside his wife after intelligence tracked his movement to an airport, where he had reportedly purchased flight tickets worth ₦9.8 million.

Assistant Commissioner of Police and Commander of the FID–STS, Victor Ogbeide, said the arrest followed credible intelligence that enabled operatives to monitor and intercept the suspect before he could travel.

He explained that the tactical team trailed Usman and moved in on him as he was en route to the airport, leading to his arrest in a coordinated operation.

Ogbeide further disclosed that security operatives also carried out a follow-up operation in a forest area in Kogi State, where two AK-47 rifles allegedly linked to the suspect were recovered.

He said the arrest was part of ongoing intelligence-led efforts to track, disrupt, and dismantle criminal networks involved in armed banditry across Kogi State and neighbouring regions.

Usman was reportedly arrested alongside his brother, Abubakar Usman, during the operation. Abubakar, however, denied any involvement in criminal activities, stating that he was unaware of his brother’s alleged activities prior to their arrest.

Security sources said the operation forms part of broader efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to curb banditry and enhance security in affected areas.
