FCT Minister Nyesom Wike
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike described the president’s swift assent as a demonstration of commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
According to the minister, the amendment of the Electoral Act and the prompt signing of the bill reflect ongoing efforts to make elections more credible and transparent.
Wike also said the development had rendered unnecessary recent protests by individuals he accused of preparing excuses for potential electoral defeat.
“Democracy has always been a work in progress. It continues to evolve, and by consistently reviewing the Electoral Act with a view to strengthening our democratic process, we will keep improving it,” he said.
He congratulated the president and members of the National Assembly for their roles in the passage and signing of the bill, noting that the president acted within 24 hours of the legislation being transmitted to him.
The Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 was recently passed by the National Assembly as part of reforms aimed at improving Nigeria’s electoral framework.
