Youths attempt to disarm soldiers enforcing curfew in Niger

Some youths in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State allegedly attempted to disarm soldiers enforcing a curfew before fleeing the scene, security sources have disclosed.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 10:35 p.m. on March 10 when troops of the 221 Battalion, Nigerian Army stationed at Wawa Cantonment were on patrol to enforce the curfew declared by the Borgu Local Government Chairman.

According to sources, the troops were patrolling around the Nigerian Correctional Service office area in New Bussa when they intercepted some motorcycles.

During the encounter, some youths allegedly became aggressive, throwing stones at the soldiers and attempting to struggle with them in an effort to seize a rifle while hurling abusive remarks.

The troops reportedly fired warning shots into the air to disperse the group, after which the youths fled the scene.

The Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service later reported the incident to the Nigeria Police Force.

Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer in New Bussa mobilised additional security personnel to the area, but the youths had already dispersed.

Community leaders, including the village head, were subsequently invited and cautioned to help maintain peace and ensure residents avoid confrontations with security personnel.

Security sources said no arrests were made and no injuries were recorded, while the soldiers continued their patrol in the area.
