Zamfara supplies weapons, vehicles for community guards

Zamfara State Government has procured weapons and 20 vehicles for the take-off of Community Protection Guards (CPG)in the state.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Enlightenment, Media and Communications, Zailani Bappah, disclosed this in a statement made available to The Star on Tuesday.

According to Bappah, 1,500 motorcycles have also been procured for the purpose to ensure smooth operations of the CPG in the state.

He said that the state government will continue to improve on the newly established CPG in order to have sufficient and efficient complement to the law enforcement agents working in the state.

He added that security operatives have been ordered to shoot at motorcycle operators who resisted checks or avoid arrest on the banned operations in some areas from 8p.m. to 6a.m.

“In response to increasing criminal activities of bandits gradually crawling into the outskirts of Gusau City, Governor Bello Matawalle announced the banning of riding of motorcycles in these areas from 8p.m. to 6a.m. He ordered security operatives to shoot at defaulters of the directive who refuse to stop or avoid arrest.

“Another measure announced is a directive to all hotels in the state to seek proper identification of their customers with any valid card such as National ID card, driver’s licence, voter’s card etc. Any defaulting hotel in the state will be severely penalised. This is in line with an executive order recently signed by the governor,” the statement added.

The state government has recently ordered for the census of all households in the state to fish out the bad eggs who reside among the people with sole intent to perpetrate criminality by aiding the activities of bandits

It added that “an emergency number (112) has now been provided for citizens in the state to call on emergency situations any time free of charge.”

Governor Matawalle called on the people to remain vigilant and report activities of informants whom he said are so far, being arrested in numbers.

He also charged security operatives to re-double their efforts in dealing with the bandits and their collaborators in the state.
