A Grade One Area Court sitting in Lugbe, Abuja, has sentenced two teenagers, 17-year-old Elijah Joseph and 16-year-old Safiyanu Bashiru, to six months imprisonment for stealing a cell phone from a shop in the nation’s capital.

The judge, Aliyu Kagarko, sentenced the teenagers after pleading guilty to the charges preferred against them by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command on Thursday, March 21, 2024.

The prosecuting counsel, Olisa-Emeka Okeke, told the court that Joseph trespassed into the shop of Ibrahim Saiabu in Kubusa Market and stole his customer’s cell phone valued at N50,000.

Okeke during police investigation, Joseph admitted to the crime, adding that he had sold the cell phone to Bashiru.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 387 and 312 of the Penal Code.

The judge, therefore, sentenced the teenagers to six months imprisonment with a fine option of N25,000.

Kagarko added that a compensation of N50,000 must be paid to the complainant.
