BEDC staff suffers electric shock in Ekiti

One of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) technical staff members sustained injuries following an electrical incident while carrying out maintenance work on an 11kV feeder in Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State.

The BEDC Head of Branding and Corporate Communications, Evelyn Gbiwen, confirmed the incident via a statement issued on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

Gbiwen said the incident occurred at about 6:20 p.m. on Saturday in the Ado-Poly Satellite Campus area of Ado-Ekiti.

Gbiwen identified the injured employee as Akinyemi Bamidele, a technical linesman.

She disclosed that Bamidele sustained burns to his arm and other parts of his body after receiving an electric shock while carrying out an operational task on the 11kV Basiri Feeder following scheduled maintenance work.

She noted that the BEDC official was immediately taken to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, where he has since been receiving treatment.

Gbiwen added that Bamidele is in a stable condition and responding well to medical care.

“BEDC Electricity Plc remains committed to the safety and well-being of its employees and is providing the necessary support to the injured staff member during this period,” Gbiwen stated.

She said the company had commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
