Buratai: I wasn’t attacked by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno

Former Chief of Army Staff and ex-Nigerian Ambassador to Benin Republic, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd), has dismissed the report that he was attacked by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State.

The senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, had said Buratai came under attack by terrorists last Friday.

However, Ndume denied claiming that the former Chief of Army Staff narrowly escaped a Boko Haram attack.

Ndume, on Monday, June 9, 2025, described the reports as a misrepresentation of his comments, noting that it was Buratai town in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State that was attacked, and not the former army chief.

Also speaking via a statement issued by his spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman (rtd), on Monday, Buratai described the purported report of attack on him as “mischievous and utterly false”.

Usman noted that the former army chief was not attacked by terrorists.

He said: “For the avoidance of doubt, he celebrated the Eid festivities peacefully in Abuja in the company of family, friends, and well-wishers. He has remained within the Federal Capital Territory since then.

“This baseless rumour is a product of the reckless imagination of the purveyors of fake news, individuals whose sole aim is to malign him, spread fear, confusion and misinformation.”
