Cape Verde captain under probe for raping translator in New Zealand

Cape Verde national team captain Ryan Mendes is under investigation in New Zealand over an allegation of rape involving a woman who worked as a translator for the team during the FIFA Series held in Auckland in March.

The alleged victim, a Brazilian translator, accused Mendes of entering her hotel room and sexually assaulting her.

Brazilian media outlet Globo reported that New Zealand police have launched an investigation, but no decision on whether to lay charges will be made until forensic examinations and other investigative processes are completed.

The woman reportedly underwent a sexual assault examination after reporting the incident to authorities.

Globo said the examination documented injuries, including vaginal lesions and bruises on her breasts, neck and lips, adding that she also provided police and the news outlet with photographs of the alleged injuries.

According to the report, the translator informed three officials of the Cape Verde Football Federation about the alleged assault, but received no response.

In a statement, FIFA said it takes “any allegation of misconduct” seriously and confirmed it is in contact with New Zealand authorities.

However, the world football governing body declined to comment further, saying: “Please understand we cannot comment further at this stage.”

The Cape Verde Football Federation has not publicly responded to the allegations.

The investigation comes as Cape Verde enjoys a historic FIFA World Cup campaign, becoming one of the tournament’s surprise performers after reaching the knockout stage in their debut appearance.

The Blue Sharks remained unbeaten in the group stage after securing draws against Spain and Uruguay.

Mendes, who plays club football for Turkish side Igdir FK, featured in all three of Cape Verde’s group-stage matches. The team is scheduled to face Argentina in the knockout stage on Friday.
