Court convicts six for environmental violations in Kano

A mobile court in Kano State has sentenced six individuals for violating environmental sanitation laws around their business premises in the Sabon Gari area.

The convicts were found guilty of maintaining dirty surroundings, failing to provide waste bins, dumping refuse into drainages, and obstructing France Road with construction materials such as sand, stones, and blocks.

Prosecuting counsel, Barrister Bahijja H. Aliyu, presented the charges, to which the defendants pleaded guilty.

Presiding Magistrate Halima Wali sentenced each offender to two weeks in correctional custody or a fine of ₦200,000.

“The court finds you guilty as charged. Cleanliness is not optional — it is a civic duty,” Magistrate Wali declared while delivering judgment.

Officials of the Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) had earlier warned the offenders and instructed them to clean their surroundings and remove obstructions, but they allegedly ignored the directives.

In her ruling, Magistrate Wali emphasized that the convicts’ actions violated environmental sanitation laws and posed health and safety risks to the public.
