Dispatch rider dies after attack by hoodlums in Lagos

A dispatch rider lost his life in Lagos after suspected hoodlums allegedly attacked him while he was riding along the Ikotun-Idimu Road in Alimosho Local Government Area.

The victim, identified as 32-year-old Emmanuel Jegede, reportedly died on Wednesday morning after losing control of his motorcycle during the incident.

Witnesses said Jegede had just completed a delivery and was heading to another destination when he was confronted near the Alhaja area by two men suspected to be hoodlums.

According to residents, the suspects allegedly attempted to extort the rider and pushed him while he was still on his motorcycle, causing him to crash into the road median. He reportedly died at the scene from the impact.

Another eyewitness said the incident may have been linked to an earlier disagreement involving the rider and a tricycle operator.

The source explained that Jegede had been involved in a minor collision with the tricycle shortly after leaving a nearby street. Residents and some youths reportedly intervened and settled the dispute peacefully.

However, the same youths allegedly demanded money from the dispatch rider for resolving the matter. When he told them he had no money, they allegedly waited for him further down the road and attacked him as he rode past.

The suspects fled immediately after the incident.

Police officers from the Idimu Division later arrived at the scene and evacuated the victim’s body.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Command said investigators had received conflicting accounts of how the crash occurred.

Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin said one version suggested the rider lost control while trying to avoid a pedestrian, while another indicated that some youths may have pushed or attacked him before the fatal crash.

He added that detectives were reviewing available evidence, including CCTV footage from the area, to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.
