Ebonyi boundary killings: Nwifuru shuts schools, banks, imposes curfew in Amasiri

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has ordered sweeping security measures in Amasiri community following the boundary crisis that claimed four lives in Okporojo village, Oso Edda, in Edda Local Government Area.

The governor imposed a daily curfew from 2 p.m. to 10 a.m., while directing the immediate closure of all government facilities in the community, including schools, banks, markets and other businesses.

The decisions were announced after an emergency meeting of the Ebonyi State Security Council at the Government House in Abakaliki.

As part of the measures, Nwifuru ordered the closure of all public and private schools in Amasiri and directed that teachers and tutors be redeployed to other communities.

He also approved the dethronement of two traditional rulers in the Amasiri clan, with letters of removal to be issued immediately.

In addition, the governor dissolved the entire leadership structure in the area, including development union executives, village heads, women and youth leaders, and other community groups.

The Security Council further directed that the chairmen of Afikpo, Ivo, Ohaozara and Onicha local government areas temporarily take over administrative activities in Amasiri.

Nwifuru said security agencies had been instructed to apprehend those responsible for the killings and restore order in the community.

He also disclosed that the state government would send an executive bill to the House of Assembly to repeal the law establishing the Amasiri Development Centre, effectively scrapping it from the list of development centres in the state.

“As of today, there will be no school in Amasiri, and there will be no development centre in Amasiri,” the governor said, stressing that the measures were necessary to prevent further violence.

He reiterated the government’s resolve to enforce law and order and ensure lasting peace in the affected communities.
