Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Enugu Zonal Directorate, have launched an investigation into a 31-year-old trader, Oduburu Lucy Oluchi, also known as Eze Chiamaka Lucy, over alleged dealings in counterfeit currency totaling N192,000.
Oluchi was arrested on December 23, 2025, at Eke Nibo Market in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State by fellow traders who suspected her of using fake notes. She was initially handed over to the Agunechemba Vigilante group, which later transferred her to the Department of State Services.
On December 29, 2025, the EFCC took custody of Oluchi and discovered that she possessed counterfeit One Thousand Naira notes with six different serial numbers. The notes included 25 with serial number A/33 334233, 30 with B/33 334432, 51 with A/83 353504, 43 with A/29 894433, 42 with A/29 894434, and one note with A29/898248.
The offence contravenes Section 151 of the Criminal Code and Sections 4 and 5 of the Counterfeit Currency (Special Provisions) Act. The EFCC stated that Oluchi will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
