Ekiti Assembly Speaker, Afuye, is dead

The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Funminiyi Afuye, has been confirmed dead.

The demise of Afuye was confirmed via a statement made available to The Star by Yinka Oyebode, the Chief Press Secretary to Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji.

Oyebode disclosed that Afuye died at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital on Wednesday after suffering a cardiac arrest.

He stated: “The Government of Ekiti State regrets to announce the death of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Funminiyi Afuye.

“Rt. Hon Afuye died Wednesday evening at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti, where he was receiving treatment after suffering a cardiac arrest.

“The late Afuye, 66, was Commissioner, Ekiti State Ministry of Information and two-time member of the State Assembly. He was inaugurated Speaker of the sixth Assembly on June 6, 2019.”

The last public function attended by the late Speaker was the interfaith thanksgiving service organised to mark Governor Oyebanji’s resumption in office.

The event was held at the Government House grounds, Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday.
