The Federal Government has clarified that no inmate has yet been released under the recent exercise of the President’s prerogative of mercy, as the process is still undergoing final administrative review.
Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), made this known in a statement on Thursday, explaining that the review is a standard procedure designed to ensure compliance with all legal and procedural requirements before any release instrument is issued.
Fagbemi said the ongoing verification stage follows the approval of the clemency list by the Council of State, stressing that it provides an opportunity for remedial checks before forwarding the final instrument to the Controller-General of Corrections for implementation.
“There is no delay in the process; it is simply following the law to the letter to ensure that only those duly qualified benefit from the President’s mercy,” the Minister stated.
“The rule of law does not rush; it ensures fairness.”
He assured that once the review is concluded, the public would be duly informed of the next steps.
Fagbemi also appreciated Nigerians for their vigilance and constructive feedback, describing public engagement as vital to promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance.
“The Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice appreciates the public’s vigilance and constructive feedback, which continue to strengthen institutional integrity,” the statement read.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency and due diligence in implementing the Presidential Prerogative of Mercy, emphasizing that every stage of the process was being handled with utmost care.
