Four killed, General survives ambush as troops repel terrorists in Borno

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 25 Task Force Brigade have repelled a terrorist ambush near Wajiroko in Azir Multe, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State, the Army said on Saturday.

According to a statement by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Appolonia Anele, the troops were returning from a routine patrol around the fringes of the Sambisa Forest when insurgents opened heavy fire on their convoy.

The patrol, led by the Commander of 25 Task Force Brigade, Brigadier General M. Uba, included soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).

Anele said the team fought through the ambush “with superior firepower,” forcing the attackers to flee in disarray and abandon their mission.

However, four personnel — two soldiers and two CJTF members — were killed in the encounter.

The Army described them as “brave” and “heroic,” adding that they died in active service to the nation.

The high command also extended condolences to their families and colleagues.

The Army dismissed reports circulating online claiming that the Brigade Commander had been abducted during the incident.

“The general public is hereby advised to disregard the fake news,” the statement said.

Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, praised the troops for their resilience and commitment despite operating in one of the country’s most challenging conflict zones.

He said their courage underscores the daily sacrifices made by military personnel to keep Nigeria safe.

The incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in Borno State, where troops continue operations against insurgent groups entrenched in the Sambisa axis.
