Gaya emirate revokes traditional title from Ganduje’s ally

The Gaya Emirate Council in Kano State has withdrawn the traditional title of Wazirin Gaya from Alhaji Usman Alhaji, the former Secretary to the State Government (SSG) during the administration of ex-Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

This move, which takes immediate effect, is believed to be connected to Alhaji’s recent public criticism of Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration, particularly over alleged excessive borrowing — a claim the state government has since denied.

In an official letter signed by the Council’s Secretary, Alhaji Bello Halilu, the Emirate cited “unavoidable circumstances” as the reason for the decision. While the letter acknowledged Alhaji’s past contributions and dedication to the Emirate, it emphasized the importance of safeguarding the integrity and dignity of traditional titles.

Tension erupts as Ganduje, APC North-East leaders endorse Tinubu without Shettima

“The Council deeply appreciates the contributions and commitment of Alhaji Usman Alhaji during his period of service as Wazirin Gaya,” the statement read. “This action underscores the Emirate’s commitment to preserving the sanctity, dignity, and integrity of traditional titles in line with established customs and values.”

The Council has also called on the public to take note of this development.

Alhaji Usman Alhaji, who is also the National President of the APC Patriotic Volunteers, had recently challenged the state government to provide a transparent breakdown of a $6.6 million external loan reportedly acquired between June and December 2023, according to data from the Debt Management Office (DMO).

He also criticized the Yusuf administration’s overall performance, alleging misuse of over ₦5 billion in ecological funds meant to address environmental issues across the state.
