Government College Ibadan shuts down indefinitely over security concerns

Authorities of Government College, Ibadan, have announced the immediate and indefinite closure of the school following growing security concerns in the area.

The decision, which took effect on Friday, June 5, 2026, was taken by the School Governing Board in consultation with security advisers, according to a notice issued to parents and guardians.

In the statement signed by the Principal, Olugbemi Oresegun, the school said the closure became necessary due to increasing security apprehension in the community, particularly in recent days.

“The safety and wellbeing of your children and our staff remains our highest priority. We cannot in good conscience continue normal school operations under the present circumstances,” the statement read.

The management directed parents and guardians of boarding students to make immediate arrangements to pick up their wards, while boarding house staff remain on ground to ensure an orderly evacuation process.

Parents of day students were also advised not to send their children to school until further notice.

Despite the closure, the school assured parents that efforts were underway to minimise disruption to academic activities. It said the academic team was developing contingency measures, including take-home assignments and possible online classes, to ensure students do not lose significant learning time.

Details of the alternative learning arrangements will be communicated through class WhatsApp groups and SMS platforms, the school said.

Management further disclosed that it is maintaining close contact with relevant security agencies and will continue to monitor developments before taking a decision on the resumption of academic activities.

The school expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the closure and appealed for the understanding, cooperation and prayers of parents during the period.

Government College, Ibadan, is one of Oyo State’s foremost secondary schools and has produced generations of prominent Nigerians across various sectors.
