‘I’m deeply sorry’: Seyi Law apologises over ‘Nigeria is safer now’ remark

Popular comedian Seyi Law has apologised to Nigerians, following the backlash that trailed his comment that the country is safer today than it was 10 years ago.

Seyi Law recently appeared on the Honest Bunch Podcast and said the administration of President Bola Tinubu had improved security in the country.

He added that bomb attacks had reduced and that security agencies were recording more successes against criminal groups compared with previous years.

However, the comment attracted heavy criticism online, with many Nigerians describing it as dismissive of the widespread cases of kidnapping, killings, and violent attacks across the country.

Responding to the outrage in a video posted on his Instagram page on Thursday night, Seyi Law said he regretted the choice of words he used and accepted responsibility for the hurt caused by the statement.

The popular comedian said while he supports the current government, that support does not prevent him from acknowledging the suffering of Nigerians affected by insecurity.

He added that government efforts, including security cooperation with the United States and increased military funding, should not be used as justification to overlook the pain of victims.

He stressed that public officials and their supporters must continue to be held accountable, particularly on issues of safety and protection of lives.

Seyi Law apologised to Nigerians who were offended by the comment and pledged to be more careful and empathetic when speaking on sensitive national issues.

He captioned the video: “My fellow Nigerians, I owe you this and more. You don’t deserve to have your sleep snatched away from you and the pain of one should be the pain of all.

“I am sincerely and deeply sorry for such insensitive statement. I apologise to victims, families and everyone who has been affected in any way by the insecurity in the country.

“As a supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, I want to also use this opportunity to call on him to intensify efforts in the battle against insecurity.

“God bless you and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
