inDrive rolls out in-app audio recording for safer rides

Ride-hailing platform inDrive has introduced a new in-app audio recording feature aimed at improving safety, promoting respectful interactions and ensuring fair resolution of disputes between drivers and passengers.

The company announced on Wednesday that the feature has been integrated into the app’s Safety Center and is now available to users in Nigeria.

According to inDrive, the feature can be activated manually by either the driver or passenger at any point during a trip, providing an additional layer of protection alongside existing safety tools such as in-trip monitoring, ride-sharing options and 24-hour customer support.

The company said the audio recording function is designed to help resolve situations where there is little or no evidence by providing an objective record that can be reviewed during official investigations into complaints.

It explained that the recordings would encourage responsible behaviour from both drivers and passengers while enabling its support team to make fair and informed decisions when disputes arise.

Country Manager of inDrive Nigeria, Timothy Oladimeji, said although most trips are completed without incident, misunderstandings occasionally occur, making it difficult to establish what transpired.

He noted that the new feature would provide an additional source of information to support investigations and improve confidence in the platform.

“Safety remains at the heart of everything we do at inDrive. We understand that privacy is just as important as safety, which is why this feature was developed with strong safeguards to ensure users remain in control,” Oladimeji said.

He added that the introduction of the audio recording tool reflects the company’s commitment to creating a safer, more transparent and trustworthy experience for both passengers and drivers.

The company stressed that user privacy remains protected, noting that audio recordings are securely stored and can only be accessed with the user’s consent during an official complaint investigation.

According to inDrive, the initiative forms part of its broader mission to promote fairness and accountability while supporting its global goal of positively impacting one billion people by 2030 through technology-driven mobility solutions.

The company said users will receive notifications within the app explaining how the feature works and how it can be activated when needed.
