Kano govt takes over prosecution of suspects in murder of woman, six children

The Kano State Government has assumed responsibility for the prosecution of suspects arrested in connection with the killing of a housewife, Fatima Abubakar, and her six children in the state.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, SAN, said the decision followed a directive by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to ensure that justice is served in the case.

Maude described the incident, which occurred at Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters in Kano, as a heinous crime and a serious violation of humanity and the rule of law, adding that the government was deeply saddened by the development.

“I am profoundly shocked and saddened by the tragic murder of a housewife and her six children. Acting on the directive of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, my office has taken over the prosecution of this case to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done,” he said.

The Attorney General commended the Kano State Police Command for what he termed a swift and professional response that led to the arrest of suspects linked to the crime.

He assured residents that the government would ensure accountability, transparency and strict adherence to due process throughout the investigation and prosecution.

Maude also urged members of the public to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, while encouraging them to continue providing useful information to security agencies. He said updates on the case would be made available as investigations and prosecution progress.

It would be recalled that police had earlier arrested a nephew of the deceased, Umar Auwalu, alongside two other suspects, in connection with the killing of Fatima Abubakar and her children.

Meanwhile, the parents of the principal suspect have called for a speedy prosecution of their son and others involved in the case.

Speaking to journalists, the suspect’s father, Malam Auwalu Abubakar, said he dissociated himself from his son over the incident and supported swift legal action.

“I dissociate myself from my son, Umar, over the killing of my sister and her children. I commend the authorities for their prompt action and urge them to ensure that all accomplices are brought to justice,” he said.

He added that he had given his son proper upbringing but could not explain how he became involved in criminal activities.

“I want a speedy prosecution. Such cases should not be delayed. The authorities should act decisively so that people do not resort to self-help,” he added.

The suspect’s father also disclosed that neither he nor the suspect’s mother planned to attend court proceedings unless formally required.

The case has continued to attract widespread attention in Kano, with residents calling for justice for the victims and decisive punishment for those found culpable.
