Kano man seeks police advice on paying wife ₦2m for second marriage consent

The Kano State Police Command has disclosed an unusual case involving a man who sought legal guidance on whether it was lawful to offer his wife ₦2 million in exchange for her approval to take a second wife.

Police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, shared the incident in a Facebook post on Saturday, noting that the man visited the Command’s headquarters in Bompai to make the inquiry.

According to Kiyawa, the man explained that his wife had refused to support his plan to remarry, prompting him to ask if offering her money to gain her consent would violate any law.

Quoting the man, Kiyawa wrote: “A man came to Bompai (Police Headquarters) saying his wife refused to allow him to marry a second wife. He wanted to know if it is legal to offer her ₦2 million to give her consent.”

Kiyawa did not, however, disclose the advice or response the man received from the police.

The post has since sparked widespread debate online, with social media users sharing mixed opinions — some describing the act as amusing, while others criticized it as a form of marital bribery.
