Kwara Assembly suspends lawmaker for recording closed-door meeting

The Kwara State House of Assembly has suspended the lawmaker representing Edu constituency, Yisa Gideon, for three months over alleged contemptuous act against the House.

The Speaker, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, who made this known during proceedings in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, on Thursday, said the suspension was with immediate effect.

Danladi-Salihu said the suspension was in line with the provisions of section 14 sub section 2 of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act 2017.

The speaker also directed Gideon to write a letter of apology to the House while on suspension.

While presenting the motion, the House Leader, Abdukadir Mogaji, said the suspended lawmaker was accorded fair hearing but did not disclose the nature of the alleged contempt.

Mogaji said Gideon was given the opportunity to appear before an ad hoc panel set up by the House to answer to allegation of contempt levelled against him and admitted to the infraction.
