Lagos govt shuts school over toddler’s death in swimming pool

The Lagos State Government has closed Smiley Kids Montessori School at Heritage Place Estate in the Sangotedo area of the state following the death of a toddler in the swimming pool.

The Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Kayode Sutton, made this known in a statement on Saturday, January 18, 2025.

Sutton noted that the school was shut on Friday, January 17.

Sutton stated that the closure was to enable the Lagos State Government to carry out preliminary investigations into the death of the two-year-old female pupil.

He said the government was deeply pained by the death and had extended condolences to the girl’s family.

Sutton said the school proprietor, the head of the nursery section, and the pupil’s teacher were being interrogated by the police.

He added that the swimming pool instructor and two caregivers were being interrogated.

According to him, the state government appeals to school owners and caregivers to comply with safety regulations to prevent accidents in schools and the entire state.
