Newcastle reject Arsenal’s opening bid for Bruno Guimaraes

Newcastle have rejected Arsenal’s opening bid for captain Bruno Guimaraes as talks continue between the two Premier League clubs over a potential summer transfer.

Arsenal are understood to be in direct negotiations with Newcastle in a bid to secure the signing of the Brazilian midfielder, who reportedly informed the club last month of his desire to join the Gunners.

Despite the player’s interest in a move, Newcastle are determined to retain their captain. Guimaraes still has two years remaining on his current contract, with the club holding an option to extend the deal by a further year.

Arsenal are now weighing whether to return with an improved offer after their initial bid was turned down.

Guimaraes has since linked up with Newcastle’s squad at their pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain, after travelling from Brazil.

His arrival at the camp was agreed with the club amid ongoing speculation surrounding his future.

The 28-year-old midfielder joined Newcastle from French side Lyon in January 2022 in a deal worth £40 million. Since then, he has made 195 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 31 goals and establishing himself as one of the club’s key players.
