State police bill to reach Tinubu September 3 — Gbajabiamila

The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has announced that the proposed Executive Bill on state policing will be submitted to President Bola Tinubu on September 3 as part of efforts to establish a legal framework for state police in Nigeria.

Chairman of the Working Group and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this on Monday after the committee’s inaugural meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

He said the bill would undergo a nationwide consultation before its eventual transmission to the National Assembly, allowing stakeholders to review and contribute to the proposed legislation.

According to Gbajabiamila, the committee is implementing a seven-week work plan designed to produce a comprehensive legal framework for state policing.

“The approved work programme is a seven-week, milestone-driven exercise running from July 27 to September 14, 2026. The resulting Executive Bill package is scheduled for presentation to the President on September 3,” he said.

He explained that once President Tinubu approves the draft, it will be subjected to public consultation, after which necessary revisions will be made before it is formally forwarded to the National Assembly.

Gbajabiamila stressed that the process would not be rushed despite its tight timeline, noting that the committee is committed to producing a robust legal framework.

He also invited Nigerians and relevant stakeholders to submit memoranda, position papers and practical recommendations to enrich the proposed legislation.

According to him, the consultation process will enable the public to examine key provisions of the bill, including funding arrangements, operational safeguards and transition mechanisms for the proposed state policing system.

President Tinubu inaugurated the Presidential Working Group in July with the mandate to develop the legal and policy framework for implementing state police across the country.
