Nigeria, Turkey sign 9 agreements to boost bilateral ties

Nigeria and Turkey have signed nine agreements to strengthen bilateral ties as part of President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing state visit to the country.

Tinubu signed the agreements alongside Turkish President Recep Erdogan and ministers from both countries after concluding a bilateral meeting in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

The agreements include Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Diaspora Policy; Agreement on Defence Cooperation; Joint Declaration Establishing the Economy and Trade Joint Committee; and Agreement in the Field of Halal Quality Infrastructure.

Others are Cooperation in the Field of Higher Education; Cooperation in the Field of Media and Communication; Cooperation in the Field of Education; Cooperation Between the Republic of Türkiye, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Diplomacy Academy, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Affairs Academy; and Cooperation Between the Republic of Türkiye, Ministry of Social services and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ministry of women Affairs and Social Development.

A statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, quoted Tinubu as expressing gratitude to Turkey for its openness and willingness to collaborate in promoting global freedom, stability, and prosperity.

Tinubu emphasised the importance of creating an inclusive economy, particularly focusing on vulnerable people.

President Tinubu commended Erdogan for being “willing to collaborate, willing to help, willing to work together to promote freedom, stability and prosperity, shared prosperity across the world.”

On his part, Erdogan commended Tinubu’s commitment to develop Nigeria and highlighted the presence of several ministers and high-ranking officials as the most unambiguous indication of this political determination.
